Social Commentary: Good Hair by Chris Rock

Chris Rock’s latest foray into film is not some fluff comedy or 90 minute stand up routine. Rock has continued to use his platform as one of the funniest men in the business to answer the age-old question: What is good hair? Prompted by his daughter’s curiosity into wondering why she did not posses this coveted texture of mane, Rock went on a quest to understand the meaning behind the black hair industry and the stigma behind the European-centric standard of what real beauty is to the African-American community. This documentary trails the world from the southern capital of the Bonner Bros. International Hair show in Atlanta, Georgia to the weave-making epicenter of the world in India. Some of these beauty practices are harsh and expensive. (I may never look at my prized “box home relaxer” the same way again.) The film though funny at times and has started the national conversation, to understand the deeper meaning behind acceptance and self-worth and the obsession to look the part at all means necessary. I had been waiting for this film to debut since it was viewed at Sundance last year and I glad that it will be released nationally next month. Support good black cinema.
